Cultural Events 2025

There were two exciting events in March where we acknowledged and rejoiced in the wonderful diversity and cultural richness of our communities. We celebrated Harmony Day at the Hub with food and cultural presentations, while our Greek dancers wowed at the Whitehorse Council CultureFest event.

Harmony Day celebrations

Harmony Day commenced with food tasting in the dining area, with members bringing tasting plates from their cultural background. A colourful and tasty spread!

The event saw a great turnout, with the crowd actively participating and often cheering along with the cultural presentations featured on the day, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. See the Photo Gallery here.

Japan

The presentations began with a Japanese Tea Ceremony prepared by Paul Maguire, a tranquil and engaging presentation that captivated the audience. This was followed by a harmonious song performed by the Japanese class members.

Italy

Next, Silvio Parisi delivered an insightful and concise history of Italian culture including the Roman Empire and Italian food, finishing with a sample for all.

Persia

Mitra Mansoori shared the Persian experience of the celebration of Nowruz, which falls on March 21st. This Persian New Year celebration includes themes of rebirth, renewal, cultural identity, peace, and unity, adding a meaningful dimension to Harmony Day’s values of inclusiveness and respect.

Malayasia

The grand finale showcased the Malaysian Peranakan culture, with members dressed in colourful traditional attire performing a lively repertoire of songs and dances. This energetic conclusion left the audience well-entertained.

Thanks

Thank you to all our presenters, the Social Committee members who served the food and drinks and to the Council staff who supported our event.

CultureFest

Our Greek Dancers shone at CultureFest See the Photo Gallery here.

On Sunday 30 March, the Whitehorse Council CultureFest celebration at Strathdon House and Gardens was the scene of many lively rhythms and vibrant movements including our U3A Nunawading Greek Dancers.

Members of our Greek Dancing class demonstrated these age-old traditions with passion and energy. The perennial favourite, Zorba the Greek, had audience members on their feet and dancing on the grass. Their performance entertained and educated the diverse cultural groups in the audience.
