U3A walk reveals Lygon Street history

inspires members of Marvellous Melbourne 3
with Class Leader Maria Ryan (seated) and
Assistant Class Leader Lyn Alexander (on her right).
Members of our Marvellous Melbourne 3 Class heard about the long and colourful history of the famous Carlton precinct from Class Leader Maria Ryan during their May excursion. Lygon Street has seen waves of immigrants settle and establish businesses since the Gold Rush. With the significant influx of Italian migrants arriving after the Second World War the precinct gained its nickname of Melbourne’s Little Italy.
During their walk the class was photographed beside a statue of Zelda D’Aprano AO, an Australian feminist activist who fought for better conditions and equal pay for women during the late 60s and 70s. In 2023, a statue of her was unveiled outside the Trades Hall in recognition of her work. Following the walk, many class members took the opportunity of having lunch at the famous University Café, an icon of Lygon Street for over 60 years.
Learning the art of calligraphy

Calligraphy Class Leader, Yoko Yuasa is very pleased with what her student Joe has learnt in a very short period of time.
“Joe started my Calligraphy class in February this year with 10 others,” Yuko said. “They were all complete beginners. I didn’t expect him to stay long because the class is usually dominated by women and men haven’t lasted long in the past.”
Joe thoroughly enjoys the Calligraphy class and has a family fan to encourage him to stick with it.
“My wife loved it!” Joe said. “I’m so glad U3A offer classes like this, and I look forward to continuing to improve under Yoko’s guidance.”
