The Class Leaders’ briefing this year was quite a bit different – it included a practice evacuation!
A great turnout of around 180 Class Leaders filled Studios 1 and 2. After a few preliminaries, Database Administrator Ken Briscoe explained that while the membership system, UMAS, is still serving us well at present, we are planning to move to a new system – Member Wizard – on 1 July. This new system has been taken up by 23 Victorian U3As, supported by U3A Network Victoria, with another 30 U3As planning to convert this year – it’s best to keep with the strength.
As a result of a less-than-successful emergency evacuation last year, Course Admin had organised for a practice evacuation for Class Leaders. Yoyo Lou (Facility Team Leader at the Hub) explained the process and then it was put into practice.
Evacuation procedures

Leaders were sent to the room they use most to check on the evacuation route. They learnt that when an emergency occurs, all doors to outside will be unlocked and most evacuation routes take you to the nearest door to outside, other than the front door – these doors are marked with an overhead green sign.
Once the evacuation sound was heard, Class Leaders followed this route to the correct evacuation point, which is well away from the building for everyone’s safety.
In the event of a future emergency, please take note of your Class Leader’s instructions as well as the emergency evacuation notice in the room. Your Class Leader is now better versed in what to do!
