For curious minds – two new science classes

From the wonders of the universe to the materials all around us, science helps us understand how our world works. In Term 4, you can explore two very different but equally fascinating areas of science: the mysteries of space, from the Moon to the earliest galaxies; and the remarkable properties of metals that shape so much of our everyday lives.

Both courses are designed to be engaging and accessible, with plenty of demonstrations, stories and discoveries along the way. No previous scientific knowledge is needed – just an enquiring mind.

26SCI012 Exploring Space Science

We’ll be joining British space scientist and science educator Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock as she takes us on a fascinating journey from the Moon to the far reaches of the universe.

Based on three entertaining videos from the Royal Institution’s 2025 Christmas Lectures, this course explores how space exploration has changed our understanding of the Moon, the solar system and the origins of the universe. Discover how the James Webb Space Telescope is helping us see the earliest stars and galaxies and explore what the Moon and stars meant to ancient civilisations around the world.

The lectures feature inventive demonstrations and special guests with deep knowledge of this field.

This course follows on from How to Survive in Space, but new participants are welcome and no prior knowledge is required.

Come and explore some of the biggest questions in science, while enjoying the curiosity, excitement and sense of wonder that have inspired generations of scientists.

26SCI023 The Technology of Metals

Have you ever wondered why steel is so strong, why aluminium is so light, or why stainless steel doesn’t rust? This course takes you on an entertaining voyage of discovery into the remarkable world of metals and the science behind their many everyday uses.

We’ll explore how steel is made and why different types have different properties; compare steel and aluminium; discover what makes stainless steel resistant to rust; and uncover the story of cast iron and the origins of ferrous metals.

You’ll also learn, in simple terms, how metals are tested for strength, flexibility and resistance to impact, and how their structure determines their behaviour. We’ll look at what can happen when metals fail, including the tragic story of the King Street Bridge failure.

There will be practical demonstrations during some classes and, if possible, an interesting excursion will be arranged.

No previous knowledge is required – just curiosity and an interest in discovering how the materials around us really work.

Weekly on Wednesday 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm, Studio 5.
