The Short Walk program is like a passport to discovery taking in the best of Melbourne and including sights many people haven’t seen before. Fourteen U3A members enjoyed a sunny day and good company on a 7km walk from Port Melbourne to Middle Park in February – the first of eleven eye-catching journeys.
Bayside beauty

The Westgate Park trail took the group off-road past the Yarra River, then onto a morning tea break overlooking Port Phillip Bay and a stroll down Beach Street taking in the sea air. This was followed by lunch at the Gasworks Arts Park – which hosts a café, art gallery and vibrant park area. Finally, a meander through the terrace-lined streets to the light rail terminal in Middle Park completed the day. The group is diverse, fun and talented! One gentleman showed his musical prowess on the piano at the Arts Centre and there are a couple of avid photographers amongst the group.
Tried and tested program

The Short Walk program was developed by David Patston some years ago and uses public transport to head north, east, south and west for the walkers to take in the local attractions. Rod Taylor, who has participated in the program for a number of years, is now the Class Leader. He is ably assisted by Ann Janssen, who is currently filling in for Rod until he returns in a few months’ time.
In March, the group are off to Clifton Hill and will follow Merri Creek to Dight Falls. Another discovery to unfold – who knew we had falls so close to the city?
