In this edition of Snippets, we focus on our members with a big morning tea, a special birthday, a Marvelous Melbourne Walk, a class snapped in the autumn sunshine and an Appy Hour reminder. Plus, the fun on offer for the forthcoming school holidays.
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

Congratulations to Cheryl Stanner and her team of Social Committee members who hosted a great event in support of the Cancer Council in the dining area of the Hub on Tuesday 6 June. For a small donation members enjoyed a wide choice of morning tea treats which were all donated. Almost every chair was taken as members took the opportunity to catch-up with friends and classmates during this great fund-raising event.

South Melbourne is a gem

Marvellous Melbourne Walkers, from left Ann Janssen, Margaret Maffey and Jill Grannon
The Marvellous Melbourne Walkers (MMW) Year 1 group were blessed with a beautiful sunny autumn day for their excursion to South Melbourne on 17 May. There were many highlights to enjoying a walk back in time learning about the history of this fascinating area with its stunning architecture, hearing stories of people and places and seeing all it has to offer today, including a bustling market.
One peek at times gone by was the portable iron house pictured with three of our walkers. Ordered from a catalogue and constructed in Britain, these houses were dismantled and sent by ship. Anyone could assemble them and they helped to meet the need for housing during the Gold Rush era. Of the nearly 100 portable buildings in Melbourne by 1855, this is one of only three remaining and is on its original site at 399 Coventry Street, South Melbourne. Thank you to MMW leaders Maria Ryan and Lynette Alexander for sharing their wealth of knowledge and expertise.
