By June MacDonald Four O’clock Forum Convenor
The Four O’clock Forums are gathering momentum and earning a reputation for increasing knowledge and wellbeing.
The Forums cover a wide-ranging set of topics as shown in this article. We have a report from last month’s session on good health, a reminder of this month’s session on online safety and an introduction to October’s session on the Bower Studio program helping remote indigenous communities. Great variety!
Cybersecurity, hacks & scams
Dianne Bunney, Bachelor of Applied Science and Founder of P1 Technologies: Wednesday 30 August, Studio 2 at 4 pm (entry from 3.55 pm)
Dianne’s company works with large organisations to manage their security systems and communication needs. We are fortunate that she has agreed to talk to us about scams, hacking, computer viruses and all those technological nasties that make us so anxious. She will advise you on who to contact (not her company) and how to prevent falling foul of an area that becomes more difficult to navigate with ever changing technologies and clever criminals wanting your data and money.
We have money wallets in an App on our phone, tickets for everything go on our Smartphones and now AI has arrived, what’s next? How do we protect ourselves? Dianne will share her expertise and give you important insights on these areas.
If you can’t get in
There is a waiting list for the August Forum, but it is worth putting your name down as more space could become available. Also consider signing up for the new session ‘23COM411 Scams and how to avoid being caught‘ at the start of Term 4.
Ask your questions
If people have any specific questions that they don’t feel confident asking – they can email me and I’ll let the speaker know so she can address them.
*Please note there is no Forum in September due to the Term 3 break.
Bower Program – Remote Communities
Dr David O’Brien, Director of Melbourne University’s Bower Studio Program
Wednesday 25 October, Studio 2 at 4 pm
Dr O’Brien will talk about Melbourne University’s Bower Studio Program which takes students into remote Australia and PNG to work with indigenous communities to co-design and co-build arts centres, cultural buildings, and health and educational facilities. He is from the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning incorporating the Melbourne School of Design.
Please enrol for the Four O’clock Forums online through U-MAS for Members or at the Reception Desk.
July’s Four O’clock Forum focussed on good health and wellbeing
Did you know that two sessions of strength training exercise each week is most beneficial to keep us strong and help ward off many of the conditions that can occur as we enter our senior years? Our presenters, Nicole Shue, Exercise Physiologist, and Piotr Korczyk, Physiotherapist, provided this information together with other important health facts at our July Four o’clock Forum – ‘Strong Bodies Remain Young’.
This was a well-attended session and members learnt about the importance of keeping active to maintain strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. And the key take-away message was that it is never too late to start. So, keep moving!
