Wanted: Healthy volunteers for brain disease research

Monash University is seeking healthy volunteers between 40 and 70 years of age to participate in research using brain imaging to measure the cellular mechanisms that drive neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia. Conducted at Monash Biomedical Imaging in Clayton, the tests take two and a half hours.

What’s involved

The research measures oxidative stress using magnetic resonating imaging (MRI) and positron emission topography (PET) brain imaging and includes a one-hour brain scan with an injection and low-level medical radiation, which is similar to many common medical procedures. Blood samples and cognitive tests will also be done.

The tests will be conducted at Monash Biomedical Imaging, 770 Blackburn Road, Clayton and a $50 reimbursement is provided.  Volunteers must not have had any history of neurological illnesses, major or repeated head injuries or claustrophobia.
