Computer classes for Terms 3 and 4

Something for everyone – from novice to advanced – in our computer classes for the rest of the year. Note that these are all short courses, so they are not a big commitment for the extra skills you’ll gain.

These are popular courses, so make sure you put a reminder in your calendar if you enrol – if you forget to turn up you are stopping someone else from taking the place!

  • 24COM301 – Advanced Android Mobile Users (Term 3). Short course. Friday, 19 July to 9 August, 1 pm to 3 pm. Leader Tom Wong. This course is for those who wish to learn more about preventing the tech giants like Google, from tracking you when using your mobile. This is not a beginner course, and members must have a basic understanding in using their mobiles.
  • 24COM303 – Getting the most from your iPad (Term 3). Short course. Tuesday 16 July to 13 August, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Tony Widdows. This is a hands-on course. See how your iPad can perform all the functions many of us need without having to buy or upgrade a computer.
  • 24COM305 – Learn Microsoft PowerPoint. Short course. Tuesday 27 August to 17 September, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Tony Widdows. This course will help anyone who wants to make presentations or draw diagrams, including U3A Class Leaders. The course covers techniques for creating an attractive and interesting presentation to engage your audience. You will need to bring your own laptop.
  • 24COM307 – Which Cloud Services should I use? Short course. Thursday 29 August to 5 September, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Tony Widdows. Google Drive, One Drive, Dropbox and iCloud are the world’s most popular cloud services. They allow us to access our work from all our devices, easily share with friends, and form part of our backup strategy. This course will help you decide which ones may be best suited to your different applications and devices.
  • 24COM309 – Windows for near Beginners. Short course. Thursday 18 July to 22 August, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Tony Widdows. A course for those who have previously used a Windows computer but are now “rusty” and wish to update their skills. Maybe you used one at work and now want to use it for safely accessing websites, emailing and storing your photos and documents? The course assumes you are familiar with using a mouse and keyboard.
  • 24COM401 – Android Smartphones for Beginners (Term 4). Short course. Friday 11 October to 1 November, 1 pm – 3 pm. Leader: Tom Wong. This course is for those who have been struggling with their Android phones and who want to learn more on how to use the basic functions. We will cover very basic phone setup, internet browsing, download apps, email, text messaging, setup contacts and how to use the camera.
  • 24COM403 – Artificial Intelligence (AI) (Term 4). Short course. Thursday 31 October to 14 November, 2 pm to 4 pm. Leader: Volker Ankenbrand. AI is in the news a lot. In this short course we will discuss the original ideas behind it, the current state of development and what the future may bring. We will cover the application of AI and its various components and discuss some of the benefits and risks of this new technology. This is a repeat of the Term 2 class.
  • 24COM405 – Could I program a computer? (Term 4). Short course. Thursday 10 October to 24 October, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Volker Ankenbrand. Did you ever wonder how computers work? What is a computer program doing? This short course will give you a basic understanding of the principles of programming. After the course you will have a basic understanding about how programs interact with the computer hardware, about how software is designed and developed.
  • 24COM407 – Making a digital photo album (Term 4). Short course. Wednesday 9 October to 6 November, 2 pm – 4 pm. Leader: Meg Lowery. A photo album is a beautiful way to show off your photos to friends and family. It also makes a wonderful gift. Find out how to use the popular program ‘Albumworks’, which is free to download and not difficult to understand. In this course you will be guided through making a practice album in class using your own photos and experimenting with ways to layout your photos and adding personal touches.
  • 24COM409 – Travel Apps-Smartphones & Tablets(T4) 1. Short course. Tuesday 8 October to 22 October, 2 pm – 3.30 pm. Leader: Wayne Henry. Many Apps that either come with or are available for your smartphone or tablet, can make your device a very useful, even indispensable, travel companion. In this short (3 week) course we will explore a range of Apps that are generally available for both Apple and Android devices that can help you to plan, manage and enjoy your trip with confidence.
  • 24COM411 – Travel Apps-Smartphones & Tablets(T4) 2. Short course. Tuesday 29 October to 24 November, 2 pm – 3.30 pm. Leader: Wayne Henry. Repeat of 24COM409 above.
