Lindsay Glen, Joanne Hart-Parker and our U3A itself were acknowledged at this year’s Deakin Community Awards ceremony at Yarra Valley Grammar in Ringwood in June.
Seniors category
Lindsay Glen has made an enormous contribution to the community over the 40 years he has lived in the area volunteering, coaching, and serving on various Little Athletics committees and in his various roles at U3A Nunawading.
Since joining U3A Nunawading upon his retirement over the 24 years ago, Lindsay has been a member of the Committee of Management from 2002 until the present day. He has served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Class Leader, Languages Course Co-ordinator, and IT and AV Support, and represents U3A Nunawading at Network and Eastern Region meetings.
In the lead-up to our move to the Nunawading Community Hub, Lindsay managed our extensive IT and AV requirements with the Council Project Manager. In addition to running his weekly Current Affairs class, Lindsay is on deck most days making sure our IT and AV equipment is fully operational so that classes and administration can run smoothly.
Lindsay received a City of Whitehorse Community Achievement Award in 2010, is a Life Member of U3A Nunawading and a Life Member of Little Athletics in recognition of his outstanding contribution to both organisations.
Group category award
U3A Nunawading also received an award for its contribution to the wellbeing of retirees particularly in the Deakin electorate. With the redrawing of Federal electorate boundaries, the Hub is no longer in the Deakin electorate, but many of our members are still residents of Deakin.
As a community-based, not-for-profit organisation, entirely run by volunteers, our contribution was acknowledged for providing learning opportunities and social connectedness for retired and semi-retired members of the local community at very low cost. Continuous growth over its 33 years has established it as one of the largest U3As in Australia with almost 2500 members this year.
The explosion in information technology has proven to be a challenge to many of our members who did not use computers in their working lives. In response, we run many introductory computer and digital technology classes covering iPads and smart phones, the Internet, and social media, as well as Q&A and help desk sessions.
U3A Nunawading believes that all our activities contribute to the mental, physical, and social wellbeing of our members and help to address potential issues of isolation.
Open category winner
Congratulations also to U3A member Jo Hart-Parker who won the Open Category of the Deakin Awards for her contribution to Heathmont Jets Junior Football Club.
