Last week was Scams Awareness week in Australia. In delayed celebration of the week, a Scams Awareness session will be held on Friday 13 September, see details below. And if you need support for your phone, tablet / iPad or computer, our “Appy Hour” sessions return in Term 4.

Scams awareness

Australians aged 55 and over lost more than $221 million to scammers in 2023. Emails, text messages and phone calls are all popular media for scammers. The best protection against scams is staying up-to-date with current scams so you can spot the signs when you see one.

Book in for the ‘How to Spot a Scam’ session:

24COM002 How to Spot a Scam Friday 13 September 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Leader Helen Smith.

Visit these websites to help you learn more.

  • Scamwatch – run by the National Anti-Scam Centre, it not only collects reports about scams to help warn others, but it also provides up-to-date information about current scams and ways you can spot them.
  • ABC News Scams and Fraud page – a collection of scams-related news articles.

“Appy Hour” returns

If you’ve got a problem using your phone, tablet, or computer, bring it along to “Appy Hour” and see if we can find a solution. “Appy Hour” runs each Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (yes, it’s actually two hours) from the start of Term 4.

Previously this service operated without a booking, but we expect this to be popular, so for Term 4 you will need to book at Reception and get a “ticket” for a time slot. Bookings open Monday 9 September.

Note this is not a class – rather, it is a problem-solving session, one-on-one.

Helen Smith
Computer Course Leader
