National Volunteer Week (NVW) is on 16 – 22 May 2022. The theme for National Volunteer Week 2022 is Better Together.

Many of you may have noticed groups of us enjoying a tasty lunch in the Hub foyer over the past couple of weeks. Duty Committee Members (Valerie, Frank, Colin, June, Gary, Athalie, Judith, Marlene, Terry and myself) were hosting our valued teams of Reception Desk Volunteers as a way of thanking them for the work they do for U3A Nunawading. The service they provide enables us to be far more responsive to our 2,000+ members than we could ever do without them.

The lunches helped them get to know their Duty Committee Member and one another on a social basis away from the demands of the Reception Desk.

Thanks especially to Valerie for this initiative and for organising the catering. It’s been a huge success, and greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

Social activities and member services

With a successful term behind us, it’s wonderful to feel more confident about planning social activities such as hot cross buns and chocolate Easter eggs at the end of Term 1, and services to members such as the visits by the hearing bus organised by Whitehorse City Council. Both events were well supported by members.

Welcome Fiona!

A hearty welcome to Fiona Allen who is joining our Communications Team. Fiona has a strong background in website management, digital communications, and photography and will be a great addition to the team. These are the members who bring us our high-quality Updates every month and manage our website. Thanks to you all!

Four O’clock Forum

Our Four O’clock Forums are proving to be very popular with over 50 people attending each session to date, and as many enrolled in future Forums. Our most recent speaker, Mark Balla, was informative, entertaining, and inspirational. Thanks to Brian Ruck for his reports on our two most recent Forums published in this Update.

Our next Four O’clock Forum on Wednesday 25 May is on Abstract Art and how it challenges the viewer to look at art differently. There will be no Forum in June as we will be on holidays.

Golden Days interview

Community radio station, Golden Days Radio, recently hosted an interview between Gerard Mansour, Commissioner for Senior Victorians, and a number of Victorian Senior of the Year awardees, including our own Vice President Valerie Donlon.

I encourage you to listen via the link below to hear their informative and delightful conversation, which focuses particularly on our U3A and how it swung into action in March 2020, following our closure due to COVID-19.
