There’s lots happening at the Nunawading Community Hub this month with the launch of the Whitehorse Seniors Festival, which was hosted by U3A Nunawading on the first Sunday of the month and Council’s annual Spring Festival to be held on Sunday 23 October. Our Social Committee is also busy planning our upcoming Melbourne Cup Eve Afternoon Tea and last week members enjoyed another Coffee & Cake event at the Hub.
Seniors Festival launch

Congratulations to everyone involved in the opening of Seniors Week at the Hub on Sunday 2 October. The outdoor entertainment of our dance and music classes was superb and was really appreciated by the audience. A huge ‘thank you’ to Paulina Chong and the class leaders for their organisation and presentation. The indoor art and craft displays, plus the Japanese dancing, organised by Athalie Edis were also great and the quality of the work showed what talented members we have.
Elsie Mutton, her sub-committee, our Front Desk Volunteers as well as members of the Committee of Management who volunteered on the day, all contributed to a special function, which we can be proud of.

Raffle

The raffle of the quilts, donated by the Patchwork 2 class, plus two yoga mat carry bags donated by Lan Tiet, was drawn and the lucky winners have been presented with their prizes.
I was very proud to be able to present a $2000 cheque, which was the proceeds from the raffle, to the President of Nunawading Rotary, Gabby Nutt as shown in the feature photo.

Coffee & cake
Our first Social Committee function of Term 4 was Coffee and Cake on Thursday 13 October. As with similar events run earlier in the year, it was well attended and gave members another chance to socialise at the Hub.
Spring Festival
The Whitehorse Council Spring Festival will be held at the Hub and Tunstall Park from 10am – 4pm on Sunday 23 October. This is a free event so come along and enjoy live music and dancing with 35 local artists and community groups, including our many classes from own U3A. There will be lots of interesting stalls and the children can enjoy free rides, face painting and other activities. See the details on the Whitehorse Council Spring Festival page
Melbourne Cup Eve afternoon tea

Our next major function is our Melbourne Cup Eve Afternoon Tea on Monday 31 October (no classes on this day) at 1.30pm in Studio 1 and 2. Guests will enjoy a glass of bubbly or soft drink on arrival followed by afternoon tea. You will also receive a free Mystery Bet on the real Melbourne Cup to be run the following day on Tuesday 1 November and a chance to win a lucky door prize.
To add to the entertainment you will be able to purchase $1, $2 and $5 tickets in a Phantom Call of the Melbourne Cup, as the actual race will still be 24 hours away. Sweep tickets will be paid out on the result of the phantom call not the actual Cup. There will also be Fashions on the Field for both Ladies and Gentleman so glam up in your finest racewear for a chance to win. There will also be plenty of chances to win a prize in our instant Trivia along the way.
Tickets are only $20 each so make up a table of eight or just buy a couple of tickets and support your hard working Social Committee for an afternoon of fun. This is a BYO drinks function and tickets are available from Reception at the Hub.
Until next time,
Gary
