With classes back for Term 1, there is certainly a buzz around the place with new and returning members enjoying our huge range of fabulous classes.
Civic Award for Andrew Lockwood
On Australia Day, a number of the Committee of Management members attended the City of Whitehorse Australia Day function to witness Andrew Lockwood receiving a Whitehorse Community Achievement Award.
Andrew has been an active and valued U3A Nunawading Committee of Management member since 2010 and our UMAS (Membership Administration System) Administrator since 2014. He is also a member of the U3A Network Committee of Management and was instrumental in establishing UMAS and supporting it in many U3As across Victoria. In 2021, Andrew was made a Life Member of U3A Nunawading in recognition of his significant contribution to our organisation.
International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day will be held on 8 March and the U3A Nunawading Social Committee will be providing morning tea from 9:40 am until 11:40 am to mark the occasion. I look forward to catching up with you on the day and remember purple, green and white are the traditional colours of the women’s movement.
Victorian Cultural Diversity Week 11 – 21 March
Victoria is home to people who speak 290 languages and have 314 different ancestries. We would like to invite our members to celebrate their culture by proudly dressing up in their national costumes and in doing so provide members a chance to discuss the many different traditions and cultures represented within our membership.
Parking
It has been brought to our attention by City of Whitehorse that Parking Officers will commence patrolling both car parks at the Hub. This should not affect any of our members, as four-hour parking is adequate in most cases. Should you need to be there longer than four hours you should move your vehicle to avoid those dreaded parking fines.
There have been a number of complaints made to Council regarding cars being parked over driveways in Esdale Street. Parking Officers will take a dim view of this behaviour and issue the appropriate fines.
With a huge influx of new members this year parking spaces are becoming hard to find at peak times, so if the car park is full, parking is available in Luckie Street at the southern end of the Hub or across Springvale Road in Tunstall Avenue or O’Shannessy Street. There are pedestrian lights opposite the Hub.
To avoid being late for class may I suggest that leaving home a little earlier will help solve the problem. Although we encourage socialising at U3A Nunawading it may also be helpful to vacate the building as soon as possible after class at peak times to free up the car park for the next lot of members.
Until next time,
Gary
