Term 1 has been very busy with the intake of a record number of new members, external meetings, and special celebrations at the Hub.

Our home was festooned in purple, green and white decorations for International Women’s Day, members could be seen wearing a range of national costumes during Cultural Diversity Week and the area next to the community library played host to five combined lunches for our Reception Desk Volunteers. And, next week our Social Committee will be serving hot cross buns.

Meeting with Whitehorse CEO & Director of Community Services

On 21 February, our Course Administrator Elsie Mutton and I met with Simon McMillan, Whitehorse CEO, and Lisa Letic, Whitehorse Director Community Services, at the Hub. We discussed a number of issues including inadequate WiFi and the ongoing problem with parking. Simon and Lisa were very supportive of U3A Nunawading and committed to addressing these and the other issues raised at our meeting. Elsie also gave them a guided tour of classes in action and I am sure that they were most impressed with what they saw.

Temporary closure to new members

At the February Committee of Management meeting, we decided not to accept any more new members for the time being. We had over 500 new members join this year, of which 360 are currently active and many others are still waiting for a vacancy in one of our classes. This makes the number of 2023 members and Leaders fast approaching 2500. To keep increasing numbers places a huge strain on parking and participation in preferred classes. Our decision on membership numbers will be reviewed at the end of Term 2.

Meeting with Annie Grigg, President U3A Network Victoria

With our temporary closure to new members, U3A Network Victoria was keen to know if we would direct new membership enquiries to surrounding U3As if they ran classes that were of interest. We will always be prepared to help people find activities of interest at other U3As if they are available.

International Women’s Day

Congratulations to Carol Clough and the Social Committee for organising coffee and cake to help celebrate International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8 March. Also, a special thank you to June MacDonald and her helpers for their superb decorations and activities to help celebrate the day.

Reception Desk Volunteers lunches

Congratulations to Athalie Edis our Reception Desk Volunteer Coordinator for organising lunch for our Reception Desk Volunteers. Assisted by Lorraine Fowles and the Duty Committee Member of the day, these lunches were a great success.

Our volunteers are of vital importance to the smooth running of our organisation and are very much appreciated by all.

Coffee and hot cross buns

This year the Social Committee will be serving coffee and Hot Cross Buns on Monday 3 April and Wednesday 5 April from 10 am until 2 pm in the Dining area. If you are at the Hub on either of these dates, please feel free to pop in and enjoy the hospitality of our Social Committee.

Until next time,
Gary
