Make new friends while playing a key role

Pictured at the recent morning tea of Team Leaders, hosted by our previous Reception Desk Coordinator Judith Palmer, are from front left: Marj Coghlan, Peg Wong, Judith Palmer, Athalie Edis, Marion Egerton, Susan Tydeman, Ruth Hoskin, Annette Samuels, David Patston and Noela Winter. Unfortunately, Cheryl Stanner and Peter Cox were unable to attend.

Linda and Bronwyn have become good friends through volunteering together on the Reception Desk at U3A Nunawading.

“I have gained a better understanding of how U3A operates and have felt a stronger connection to the organisation,” said Linda, when asked about her role as a volunteer on the Reception Desk.

“I love welcoming and helping new members,” added Bronwyn.

The Reception Desk is a vital part of U3A Nunawading

These Volunteers assist members with all sorts of things – from how to find their class, learning about new activities and events and finding lost belongings. The Reception Desk Volunteers welcome new members, answer enquiries and take payments for enrolments and U3A social events. A friendly voice at the end of the phone is so important for people who are making inquiries about joining U3A or wishing to apologise because they will be absent from class.

Volunteers are rostered in pairs. They form small teams, supported by a Team Leader, to perform this important role at U3A Nunawading. Our Reception Desk Coordinator Athalie Edis, who took over the role following this year’s AGM, also supports each team and oversees the operation of the Reception Desk. People are rostered on for 31/4 hours either in the morning or afternoon once a month, or more regularly if they choose. Plenty of training is provided so Volunteers understand the work and are comfortable with their role.

Have you thought you would like to contribute to U3A Nunawading? Like Linda and Bronwyn, volunteering on the Reception Desk in 2023 could be a “new door opening” to all possibilities.
