Spot-on prediction

By Allan Brownrigg

Every time we have a federal election the members of my Current Affairs Class are asked to predict the result. This year the task was to predict the number of seats the ALP would win in the House of Representatives.

Competition was fierce, but there was one clear winner. Glen Chandler was exactly right with 77 seats. Much better than most pundits and the opinion polls! There were also five close runners up who predicted 78 or 76. Congratulations to Glen who won the coveted Freddo Frog!

Black sesame chiffon cake making

By Kitty Wong

The Sugar Craft class used the Hub’s commercial kitchen for the first time this year to conduct a baking demonstration. We are very fortunate to have class members who are excellent cooks and willing to share their expertise.

Vivian Tang gave an amazing demo on how to make a black sesame chiffon cake. She started making chiffon cakes when she was 17 years old and Vivian shared with the class every skill she gained over the years. Without a doubt, everyone enjoyed the yummy demo cakes fresh from the oven and thoroughly enjoyed the class.

We are all looking forward to more regular cooking demonstrations in the Hub’s superb commercial kitchen.

Early French National Day celebration

By Brigitte Ciurleo

On Wednesday 22 June, 33 very excited, motivated and colourful Nunawading U3A members of Thierry’s and Brigitte’s French classes attended an early celebration of France’s National Day at Bistro Chez Nous in Surrey Hills.

Dressed in French colours of “bleu, blanc, rouge” and different styles of berets, we thoroughly enjoyed a magnificent 3 course meal with French wines whilst chatting and getting to know each other better in an informal and delightful setting. Before dessert, we all stood up to sing “La Marseillaise” with passers-by admiring our performance.

Happy snappers improve their photos

By Helen Smith

In the last three weeks of Term 2, 13 members got together to explore how to take better photos with their smartphones. They learnt to find the best light to highlight their subject, to check their photos to avoid distractions – no more rubbish bins in the background – and to be aware of getting horizontal and vertical lines straight, among other tips and tricks.

Members had great fun putting these tips into practice in the sessions. As U3A Network Victoria was running a photo competition, ‘Show Us How You U3A!’, we entered this photo showing how much fun we were having with our phone cameras. The library photo in the President’s article was also taken by this group.
