Snippets

This month in Snippets we visit The Lume, photograph a Wednesday walking group, showcase the colour red and play a little table tennis. There’s also news of a doll-dressing competition and a musical event you may wish to attend.

The Lume visit

By Valerie Donlon

Members of the Art Appreciation 3 class were completely immersed in the works of Vincent van Gogh recently when we visited THE LUME, a digital art gallery located inside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The exhibition celebrates the genius of Vincent van Gogh with his masterpieces projected four-storeys high and his own words woven together with beautiful musical soundscapes. We were even able to enter a physical reproduction of the artist’s much-painted bedroom and be enveloped by thousands of sunflowers. To round off our amazing experience we enjoyed lunch at Café Terrace 1888, which formed part of the exhibition.

A tale of two U3A classes

By Ken Briscoe

What do you do when a photo of a brisk walk with Glenn’s Wednesday Walking Group along the Yarra River at Warrandyte on an icy cold, sunny morning, just doesn’t come out well? Easy – join Archie’s Photo Editing class and learn how to apply a little of the magic he teaches.

Before
After

Still a novice, the “After” photo is my first effort. A bit of cropping and straightening, a few overall colour tweaks here, some adjustments with masking there, a little blurring to highlight the mist (hmmm…not so sure about that) and hey presto.

Most of my photos need a fair bit of loving care, and to learn this, I highly recommend Archie’s 6-week course. It will be repeated in Term 4 this year and in 2023.

Showcasing the colour red

By Barb Gardiner

Using the colour Red as their class topic, several members of the Art History and Appreciation group 1, provided interesting and insightful presentations on the use of the colour red to enhance and highlight both traditional and modern artworks. To complement the topic, class members also dressed in red to enliven the presentations!

Table tennis news

By Colin Smith

Despite the rather cool mornings our group is expanding rapidly with some good play happening once we have warmed up. We had a visit from Liz Hooper and Greg Walker, the outgoing and incoming president, who enjoyed morning tea with us.

All members are welcome to visit to see what goes on a Tuesday morning out at Kilsyth and “try before buying” as the saying goes. Our group is looking forward to a trip to Eastland Shopping Centre between 5 and 10 September to see the International Table Tennis Federation Oceania Senior and Youth Championships. Entry is free, for more details go to https://eastland.qicre.com/Promotions/2022/09/Table-Tennis-Tournament
