As we step into Spring, this sunny edition of Snippets includes the Whitehorse Council’s school holiday program; a chance to have your say on the Positive Ageing Service; a call for Meals on Wheels volunteers; an important thunderstorm asthma warning; and an update on the old U3A premises at Silver Grove.

Seeking feedback on positive ageing

Whitehorse City Council is expanding its Positive Ageing Service and is running a survey to seek feedback on what will best meet the needs of the community. The online survey closes on 31 October and can be accessed at https://yoursay.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/positive-ageing

Volunteers needed for Meals on Wheels

If you are an early riser, and would like to start your day by helping older people in our community, or you have downtime between classes and find yourself looking for something to do, you might like to consider volunteering for Whitehorse Meals on Wheels.
This iconic service is community-based and volunteer-driven, and needs people to help pack the healthy meals that volunteer drivers deliver across the community every day. Located on the lower ground floor of the Hub, there is a range of opportunities to get involved with at different times of the day, in different ways.
If you are interested in volunteering, please come in and see Rebecca at the Whitehorse Meals on Wheels office at the Hub, or call 9017 3881, or email For further information visit www.mowfuturefit.com.au/whitehorse
Thunderstorm asthma warning

The Victorian Department of Health is raising awareness of the upcoming risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma during grass pollen season (1 October – 31 December). If you suffer from asthma and/or hay fever, it is important to be prepared if such an event occurs. Please refer to the website for more information, https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/thunderstorm-asthma
Silver Grove demolition

By Ken Briscoe, Course Administration Team
Our previous home of some 20 years at the Silver Grove Community Centre is being demolished. It will disappear along with the Seniors Hall, following the fate of all the other old buildings on the site – many of which U3A used for classes.
Many members have asked about the plans for the future of this site and we put this question to Simon McMillan, the City of Whitehorse Chief Executive Officer and he replied:
“Council is currently demolishing the former community centre and senior citizens/meals on wheels buildings in the Silver Grove precinct. These are the only remaining buildings in the precinct and have been vacant since the Nunawading Community Hub opened. Council has made no decisions on the future use of the Silver Grove precinct. Any decision regarding the future of this site will include consultation with the community.”
