Snippets

Our October Snippets covers a unique approach to learning Japanese; some free tapestry canvases on offer; plenty to enjoy at the Spring Festival; and an important warning for Thunderstorm asthma.

Adding fun to learning

There’s plenty of laughs in the Japanese for Basic Beginners class led by Athalie Brooks and Meryl Teather with the group challenging their knowledge of Hiragana (one of the basic Japanese syllabaries) with a game of Slappo. The competitive spirit is alive and well!

Free tapestry canvases

We have been donated a large number of preprinted tapestry canvases, some of which we gave away at Seniors Festival. But there are still some left. If you would like some of these, please talk to Elsie about choosing the ones you would like. Some sample designs are shown here, but there are lots more. Get in quick before they go to the Op Shop.

Lots to enjoy at the Spring Festival

The Whitehorse Spring Festival will be held on Sunday 17 November from 10 am to 4 pm at the Whitehorse Civic Centre Precinct. The free event with a Superheroes theme will feature live music and dancing with over 30 local artists and community groups. There will be 80 stalls, a selection of delicious food and treats, and entertainment for the kids which will include free rides, face painting, and activities.

Thunderstorm asthma warning

During grass pollen season (1 October – 31 December) people may experience an increase in asthma and/or hay fever symptoms, and epidemic thunderstorm asthma may occur. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious, and even life threatening.

To receive up-to-date epidemic thunderstorm asthma advice and warnings during the season, download the VicEmergency app or access their website emergency.vic.gov.au/prepare/#thunderstorm-asthma-forecast and consider setting up a ‘watch zone’ for your area.
