Getting to know our dynamic U3A team

Colin receiving his Victoria Day award from Nick McGowan, MP

As we continue to peek behind the operational scenes at U3A Nunawading, this month we talk to Colin Carter who plays an important role on the Committee of Management, is an active class leader, and has won an award for his community contributions.

Hello to Colin Carter

Colin Carter has used his knowledge and expertise gained from a successful career as an accountant to thrive in retirement, volunteering in related and, unrelated fields. His active community contributions were recently recognised when he was awarded a Victoria Day Award. Luckily, U3A Nunawading has been the beneficiary of Colin’s volunteering goodwill!

A valued volunteer

Melbourne born and bred, Colin joined U3A Nunawading in 2017. He has served on the Committee of Management since 2019, first as Secretary, and in 2023 he was elected Treasurer.

“I really enjoy being on the U3A Nunawading Committee of Management,” Colin said. “It is stimulating and gives me a sense of purpose.”

Outside of U3A, Colin has used his expertise to serve as a committee member and President of Australian Independent Retirees; President of Kurrajong Way Blackburn North Owners Corporation; and was the convenor at the BIG Investment Club in Blackburn.

He has also continued his interest in investments as a participant of U3A’s Investment group.

Colin’s holistic approach

In contrast to the facts and figures that run through Colin’s blood, he has also been leader of a weekly emotional wellbeing class for the last six years. It focuses on a spiritual (non-religious) approach to life and aligns with his response to what is his most treasured possession; “A happy and sound mind and peace in life.” The class has been very rewarding for Colin and its participants. Next term it will take a brief hiatus but will restart in 2026.

Colin also participates in a U3A short walking group and enjoys reading and meditating as part of embracing the values of mind, body and soul. Relaxing with friends and family (two children, one grandchild and one greatgrandchild), watching films directed by Wes Anderson and supporting the Richmond Football Club (although not that much joy this year) are also high on his list of good things to do.

“I feel grateful that I’m well into my retirement and have happiness and good health,” Colin added. “In fact, I can confidently say this is the best time of my life!”
