U3A Nunawading held its 32nd Annual General Meeting at the Nunawading Community Hub on Wednesday 17 August with approximately 70 members and invited guests in attendance. This was our first AGM at our new home and the first held face-to-face since 2019 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The meeting opened with retiring President Liz Hooper’s Acknowledgement of Country and welcome to guests: City of Whitehorse Mayor Cr Tina Liu, our Ward Councilor Denise Massoud, Council Officers Jennifer Schoof and Melissa Moldrich, U3A Network Victoria Vice President Anne Grigg, U3A Ringwood Treasurer Alex Robertson, Life Members and Members. Apologies were then noted.
The Minutes of the 31st AGM, available from 10 August on our website as part of the 2021 – 2022 Annual Report, were accepted.
Under Correspondence, Liz responded to a question received in writing from a member asking what was proposed to be done with our larger than normal bank balance. Liz advised the meeting that our financial position was partly due to rent relief received from Council because of COVID-19 lockdowns and it enabled us to keep members’ fees lower than our actual operating costs.
Liz then delivered her President’s Report and Treasurer Pauline Wang presented U3A Nunawading’s Financial Accounts for the 2021-2022 year. The Treasurer advised the meeting that due to our strong financial position the 2023 Membership Fee for current and new members would be $50.00.
Full details of both reports are available in our 2021-2022 Annual Report.
The election of Office Bearers and Committee Members

As the number of nominations did not exceed the number of vacancies the following members were elected unopposed for the next 12 months:
- President: Gary Walker
- Vice Presidents: Valerie Donlon and Athalie Edis
- Secretary: Colin Carter
- Treasurer: Pauline Wang
- Committee Members: Frank Baseden, Ken Briscoe, Paulina Chong, Carol Clough, Sue Ebert, Marlene Fernandes, Lorraine Fowles, Lindsay Glen, Terry Hart and Elsie Mutton OAM.
As former President Liz Hooper and Committee Members, June MacDonald and Judith Palmer, did not re-nominate incoming President Gary Walker paid tribute to their individual contributions to our U3A. Unfortunately, June was interstate and unable to attend the meeting so received her presentation from Liz at our July Four O’clock Forum.

Life membership

Gary then presented Liz Hooper with Life Membership in recognition of her three years as President. Gary congratulated Liz on carrying out her role so well in spite of the significant challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
