Addressing the ‘bias’
The U3A lawn bowls experience
At the commencement of 2021, the Blackburn North Bowling Club (BNBC) approached Nunawading U3A with a view to running beginner classes for those students interested in the Royal and Ancient game of skill and fellowship.
To date some forty-odd members have attended the introductory classes, which run on Thursday afternoons during each term. A number of these members have embraced the challenges and rewards afforded by the game and have duly joined the Club as regular members.

The latest group of ‘alumni’ posed for a photo wearing caps in Club colours in preparation for the upcoming Pennant season, where clubs play each other in a home and away format, with promotion and relegation the ultimate result.
Pictured left to right are Karen Lewis, Ann Wang, Jenni Gratton, Julie Wood, Kevin Lewis, Sandra Bodey (Box Hill U3A) and Margaret Fehring (Assistant Coach).
BNBC welcomes new students (maximum 20) each term and provides a basic introduction to the game, including theory and practice and covering:
- Terminology, rules and etiquette
- Biomechanics of delivering a bowl
- Formats of play – Singles, Pairs, Triples and Pennant
- Tactical considerations
Members wishing to investigate the fun game for all ages, genders and abilities are encouraged to enrol in Lawn Bowls – Introduction listed in the U3A timetable.
Oh, and the ‘bias’ mentioned in the title refers to each bowl’s construction such that it never rolls in a straight line, but follows an arc on its journey to the target. How do bowlers allow for said complication, you ask? Well, come to class and find out!
