From the Course Admin team

Didn’t the trees look beautiful in Autumn? We’ve captured the brilliant colours of the trees behind the Hub in late May (above). The gardens are also looking good, thanks to the gardeners who attend every fortnight rain, hail or shine.

As this term winds down, we have quite a few new courses for Terms 3 and 4 – see below and the separate item on computer courses.

Reminder

• Term 2 finishes Friday 27 June
• Term 3 commences Monday 21 July
• Yes, it is a three-week break.

Hopefully this break will give us the opportunity to clear out the colds and flu everyone seems to be experiencing.

Biggest Morning Tea for cancer research

Thank you to all who supported this event. The Thornburn Ladies Badminton Association raised $2800. Congratulations to our member, Lana Yung, who had the closest guess to how many lollies were in the jar – just ONE away from the actual number of 1433! She generously shared them with those around when she picked them up. Around 14 of you received a prize from the raffle.

Name badges

The new pin on badge holders have arrived and there is no excuse for you not to wear a badge whilst doing exercise, dance or any other activity with U3A. We would prefer you to wear your lanyard name badge whilst you are in the Hub but if you prefer the pin-on one, that is fine. The important thing is you wear a U3A Nunawading name badge with the emergency details filled in as soon as you walk through the Hub doors.

Opening times for the Hub

If you arrive before opening time, please DO NOT ring the bell, the Whitehorse duty person has jobs that need to be done before the doors open.

The official opening times for the Hub are:
     Main door:
          Monday to Friday 8.30am
     Esdale street entrance:
          Monday and Tuesday 8.30am,
          Wednesday 8.15am,
          Thursday and Friday 8.30am.

25HUM025: Keep Your Brain Active: Terms 3&4. Tuesday 9:30 – 11 am. Meeting Room 4. Leader Tom Edwards.
It is as important to maintain cognitive function as we age as it is to maintain our bodily health. It is necessary to have a variety of types of stimuli and not just the one, e.g. crosswords. This we can achieve with the many types of logic puzzles available: the misuse of probabilities and statistics; optical illusions; magic tricks; any phenomena that makes us think outside the box, that gives us an Ah Ha moment.
This class will make you think but it will not be stressful: it will be great fun. This class will run in Terms 3 (Part A) & 4 (Part B) and is a repeat of the class run in Terms 1 (Part A) & 2 (Part B). Part B can be taken before Part A. Members from that class may also enrol in this repeat course if they wish to continue, but it is also open to new members.

25HUM040: Mindfulness (Term 3). Monday 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Meeting Room 5. Leader Bronwyn Roberts.

25HUM072: The Truth of who you are. Re-commencing 23 July for new enrolments. Wednesday 11:15 am to 12:45 pm. Studio 3. Leader Colin Carter.
When you can really see through the egoic version of yourself and see a more authentic self, your life will become more complete, fulfilled, and more resilient to what our stage of life can throw at us. It is a mix of science, raw spirituality, and psychology.

25LANC33: Chinese Conversation – Basic. Wednesday 12:15 – 1 pm. Meeting Room 1. Leader Echo Zhou.
This class is for the member who has a basic knowledge of the Chinese Language and would like to practice speaking, listening and have conversation.
This is a repeat of 25LANC30 in Term 1, but members who have completed Term 1 can also enrol in this Term 3 class if they wish.

25LANE30: EAL Intermediate 6. Monday 9:30 – 10:30 am. Meeting Room 1. Leader Charlie McKavanagh.
The aims of this small, friendly class are to increase your understanding of both spoken and written English and to develop your confidence when you want to communicate using English. Pronunciation, vocabulary, understanding of grammar and different sentence structures will be continually improved through discussion and conversation as well as short reading and writing tasks. Topics for discussions will depend on what happens during the year as well as the needs and interests of class members. (Some examples: travel, families, festivals, behaviour and language for formal occasions, the arts, sport, song lyrics, Australian humour, some history of Australia, comparing cultures, food!)

25LANT01: Thai Language Beginners. Wednesday 2:45 – 3:45 pm. Studio 3. Leader Sue Pipat.
This class will introduce you to the Thai Language that is used every day. It will also introduce you to the culture and customs of the Thai people.

25MUS014: Guitar Basic Beginners. Thursday 1 – 2 pm. Studio 9. Leader Masa Ike.
This is a class for people who have never played a guitar before. We will cover the basics from finding/selecting a suitable guitar, how to tune your guitar, string numbering, and how to play a basic scale and simple chords. You will need to bring your own six-string guitar. It can be classical (nylon string), acoustic (steel string), or electric. Please note, if you are bringing an electric guitar, you will also need to provide your own small practice amp. If you have not purchased an instrument yet, please contact the Class Leader () to discuss before spending any money.
This course is NOT suitable for people who can already tune their guitar, play a few chords and/or pick some notes.
