Chocolate brownie demo
By Kitty Wong, Sugar Craft Class Leader

Rupa Thakkar made Chocolate Brownies in the demonstration kitchen and brought a pre-baked slab for the class to sample while we were waiting for the demo brownie to cook. The Brownie was wonderful! Vivian Tang was the Sous Chef assisting Rupa. Vivian also brought us her signature mango mousse cake, which was divine. She has kindly agreed to teach us how to make the mousse cake next year.
Moon cakes
By Lan Tiet, Class Leader

We made two different types of cake, baked moon cake, and iced skin moon cake, which has a white skin without baking. This was a joint effort run by myself and Yusiko, who was responsible for the snow skin moon cake demonstration. The class had a lot of fun and here are some lovely photos of our bakers in action.

August military history newsletter tells Australian stories

The current edition of the quarterly newsletter prepared by the U3A Military History Group gives some interesting aspects of Australian history you may not know. The lead story shows how close the Japanese came to Australia. Another article tells the story of the HMAS Patricia Cam and its crew, taken prisoner by the Japanese in Australian waters.
The Reverend Leonard Kentish (pictured), a Methodist Missionary in the Northern Territory, was in charge of northern coast watchers during WWII. Reverend Kentish became the only Australian captured in Australian waters while travelling on HMAS Patricia Cam. He was imprisoned, tortured then executed by the Japanese in 1943.
