Spring Festival in pictures

U3A Nunawading once again made a vibrant and memorable contribution to the Whitehorse Spring Festival, held under perfect spring skies that drew an excellent turnout from the community.

Our performers brought colour, energy and enthusiasm to every part of the event. The Silver Grove Swing Band opened with a lively set that attracted a delighted crowd. They were followed by our energetic Zumba group, whose upbeat routines filled the area with excitement. The Choir then delivered a spirited and heartfelt performance that resonated beautifully throughout the festival grounds.

On 1 October the Hub was bursting with activity for our 35th birthday celebration and the Grand Opening Extravaganza for Seniors Festival. Lively and colourful performances filled the Stadium and Studios 1 and 2, while demonstrations occupied the library space and quieter pursuits such as art and craft filled Studios 6, 7, 8 and 9 as well as Meeting Room 2. Spring Celebration in pictures

The Panorama Room was very bright and cheery on 24 September for our Spring Celebration. Table napkins of yellow and orange brightened up white tablecloths, and colourful butterflies and cute bumble bees perfected a cheery atmosphere.

Mooncake cooking demonstration in pictures

The mooncake cooking demonstration presented by Lan Tiet was a great success, with 34 eager participants. Lan had some beautiful hand-crafted mooncakes prepared beforehand and showed the group how these are made. She encouraged a couple of participants to come up and learn (hands on) as she made them.

Potter Museum trip in pictures

In late August, the Thursday Art Appreciation class visited the Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne to be overwhelmed by the more than 400 works on display, including artworks and cultural objects from the University’s collections, loans from private and public lenders and new commissions.

65,000 Years: A short history of Australian art celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art while confronting our nation’s colonial history and the importance of Indigenous knowledge and agency. The exhibition, which finishes on 22 November, is free and easily accessed by public transport.

Annual General Meeting 2025 in pictures

On Wednesday 20 August, we were pleased to welcome 115 members and 15 guests for the 2024/2025 Annual General Meeting. The business of the day included reporting to members on the activities of the Committee of Management and electing a new Committee of Management for 2025/2026, as well as setting the membership fees for the coming year.

Dragon Boat Festival in pictures

The Dragon Boat Festival was the first Chinese holiday to be included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar – 31 May in 2025. The festival is celebrated by holding dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings called zongzi. Our U3A joined in the festivities.

In preparation for this festival, Class Leader Lan Tiet offered a demonstration of making sticky rice dumplings with different fillings such as chicken, pork or seafood with mushrooms and other vegetables, all inside a sticky rice coating and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Great fun was had as many class members attempted to wrap their dumplings in the stiff leaves – with varying levels of success.

Harmony Day 2025 in pictures

Harmony Day commenced with food tasting in the dining area, with members bringing tasting plates from their cultural background. A colourful and tasty spread!

The event saw a great turnout, with the crowd actively participating and often cheering along with the cultural presentations featured on the day, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere.
