Whitehorse Council has advised us that scammers have been calling residents claiming they were doing a five question survey on behalf of the Whitehorse Council. The questions they have asked include “How much do you earn”, “Do you live on your own”, etc.

Make your own Christmas cards, decorations or gifts

This year we are running a range of Christmas Workshops for members who would like to try their hand at making their own Christmas cards, decorations or gifts.

A number of our Craft Leaders have kindly agreed to run these classes over the first two weeks after the end of Term 4. Commencing on Monday 29 November and ending on Wednesday 8 December you will have the opportunity of learning how to make a range of lovely handmade Christmas items.

2022 Summer School planning well underway

Plans are well underway to make next January’s Summer School the most varied ever, with a wide range of new and exciting classes and activities already confirmed.

Just as a preview of what’s planned so far, you will be able to watch cooking demonstrations in our specially designed Hub kitchen, visit members’ gardens in our very own open garden scheme, hear some fascinating lectures and participate in some great craft classes.

What is thunderstorm asthma?

For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.

During grass pollen season (1 October – 31 December) you may notice an increase in asthma and hay fever. Grass pollen season also brings the chance of thunderstorm asthma.

$250 Power Saving Bonus

The Victoria State Government is offering a $250 Power Saving Bonus, which is a conditional one-off payment to provide direct support to Victorian households experiencing energy bill stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is available until 31 January 2022. You will need to apply online by visiting compare.energy.vic.gov.au

31st Annual General Meeting

President Liz Hooper welcomed approximately 65 members and invited guests to U3A Nunawading’s 31st AGM, which was held via Zoom due to current COVID-19 restrictions.

Committee Members Andrew Lockwood and Andrew Gee did not re-nominate and the President paid tribute to their individual contributions to our U3A. Gary Walker and Marlene Fernandes have joined the Committee of Management for the next year, with Gary Walker taking one of the Vice President positions. 

Andrew Lockwood was awarded Life Membership of U3A Nunawading in recognition of his outstanding contribution since joining the committee over 10 years ago

Cancelled celebration funds to off-set 2022 fees

A 30th anniversary celebration was planned for last year but was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
We have regretfully decided to cancel our 31st Anniversary Celebrations. The funds set aside for the event will be returned to members as a discount on their 2022 membership fee.
Although we are unable to hold our celebration, a book of members’ recollections will be launched when we return to the Hub. The book contains stories told by members in their own words about their lives

Suspension of face-to-face classes extended

As a result of the Victorian Government announcement on 16 August that the current lockdown is to be extended for an additional two weeks, we are sorry to advise you that there will be no face-to-face classes until further notice. 

While we are currently unable to attend classes at the Hub our lovely community garden continues to flourish
