Term 1 has been very busy with the intake of a record number of new members, external meetings, and special celebrations at the Hub. Our home was festooned in purple, green and white decorations for International Women’s Day, members could be seen wearing a range of national costumes during Cultural Diversity Week and the area next to the community library played host to five combined lunches for our Reception Desk Volunteers. And, next week our Social Committee will be serving hot cross buns.

Earlier this month U3A Nunawading hosted a visit by the Commissioner for Senior Victorians, Gerard Mansour, who was very impressed by what he saw at the Hub.

While many classes are full with waitlists or even closed, we are pleased to be offering eight new classes starting next term. There are also a number of classes that still have vacancies and some are listed here after the New Classes commencing in Term 2.

The morning tea held to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on 8 March attracted a steady stream of members who were very keen to chat, enjoy a cuppa and cake, and try their hand at making butterflies and paper planes, which they could take for a test run outside.

The outstanding decorations and activities reflected this year’s theme of ‘Innovation for a gender equal future’ and the IWD colours of purple, green and white.

The theme for Victoria’s 2023 Cultural Diversity Week held earlier this month was Our Past. Our Future: Celebrating and reflecting on the contribution of our multicultural communities.

We are very proud of U3A Nunawading’s diversity, which is reflected in all aspects of our operations. Many of our Class Leaders, Reception Desk Volunteers and Committee of Management members were born overseas.

Reception Desk Volunteers gather for lunch

Usually, only two U3A Reception Desk Volunteers are seen at any one time in the U3A Nunawading Reception area. However, each day for a week this month, many Reception Desk Volunteers were seen enjoying lunch together next to the community library at the Hub. Each team of volunteers had the rare opportunity to meet one another and to socialise.

Snippets

There is plenty to see and do locally and some great initiatives to consider in this month’s Snippets including an immersion in local art and history; applying for the power saving bonus; enjoying the school holiday program; entering the Upcycle art competition; taking up the opportunity to recycle; and signing up for the Whitehorse Community Support Register. Plus, a happy snap of one of our own Art Appreciation Groups.
