Greetings, all. I’d like to introduce myself as the new President of U3A Nunawading. I look forward to the privilege of leading this wonderful organisation for the next 12 months.

A quarter of a million hours!

Did you know that the number of hours attended by members of U3A Nunawading in a year is this large? And all delivered by a volunteer team and Class Leaders totalling about 350 members. Every single hour is a gift from our incredible volunteers and Leaders who pour their hearts into keeping our community vibrant, affordable, and welcoming. They are the backbone of everything we do. Next time you visit our U3A and enjoy a class, please take a moment to share a warm smile or a simple “thank you” with the volunteers who make it all possible.

From the Course Admin team

If you were in a class on Monday afternoon 31 August, you would have seen some visitors being shown around the Hub – see the photo above. They were from U3A Network Victoria and Melbourne City U3A, accompanied by a staff member of the City of Melbourne. They were impressed with how welcoming our U3A is and the comradeship between members, volunteers and City of Whitehorse staff.

In this edition, there is advance notice of enrolment dates and limits; some hints about using Member Wizard; reminders about the car park and absences; and an invitation to join us for the Whitehorse Seniors Month Grand Opening.

For curious minds – two new science classes

From the wonders of the universe to the materials all around us, science helps us understand how our world works. In Term 4, you can explore two very different but equally fascinating areas of science: the mysteries of space, from the Moon to the earliest galaxies; and the remarkable properties of metals that shape so much of our everyday lives.

Both courses are designed to be engaging and accessible, with plenty of demonstrations, stories and discoveries along the way. No previous scientific knowledge is needed – just an enquiring mind.

Seniors Festival – join the celebration!

Following our new tradition, we are again opening the Whitehorse Seniors Festival with our vibrant performances of dance, exercise and music as well as fascinating displays of art and craft across the Hub.

The Grand Opening will be held on Thursday 1 October from 10 am – 3 pm at the Nunawading Community Hub. This year’s program is as varied and exciting as we have come to expect from our wonderful performers and exhibitors – something for everyone to enjoy! View or download the program here.

A visit from the local childcare centre

Cross-generational activities are great for both generations involved, as we have seen in the TV series “Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds”. On Monday 4 August, we had our own version of this when a group of children from the neighbouring Explorers childcare centre visited the Chinese Dance class.

Both age groups enjoyed the session immensely. The children created a Thank You card including the message below from the Educators. The card is on display near the entrance to the Hub.

Tips for reaching 000 if you’re having trouble connecting

In an emergency, getting help quickly is what matters most. We all know to call 000, even from a mobile phone, but there have been problems recently with calls not connecting. Here’s what you should know.

Even when you are outside your provider’s mobile network coverage, a 000 call can still be made, if another mobile network is available.

Spring has arrived and our September Snippets include a raft of spring offerings. Aqualink is offering a discount on membership, Heritage Week reminds us of the way our streets are changing, the Big Sing brings community voices together, and the Beyond Age exhibition celebrates experiences of ageing. There’s also a Chinese cultural festival celebration, an opportunity to discover the new senior exercise equipment in Tunstall Park and a local school holiday program to explore. In addition, there’s a reminder about street parking, news from the café and a call for volunteers for our newsletter team.
