Didn’t the trees look beautiful in Autumn? We’ve captured the brilliant colours of the trees behind the Hub in late May (above). The gardens are also looking good, thanks to the gardeners who attend every fortnight rain, hail or shine.
As this term winds down, we have quite a few new courses for Terms 3 and 4 – see the list in this article and the separate item on computer courses.
The second half of the year brings back some of our most popular computer classes, plus a few brand-new and topical ones to explore! These short courses range from one-off sessions to six-week programs, so there’s something to suit everyone’s schedule.
Spots fill up fast, so don’t forget to pop a reminder in your calendar when you enrol. Keep the times free, and be sure to join us for that all-important first session!

The Dragon Boat Festival was the first Chinese holiday to be included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar – 31 May in 2025. The festival is celebrated by holding dragon boat races and eating sticky rice dumplings called zongzi. Our U3A joined in the festivities.
There is an abundance of people with talent, skills and fascinating backgrounds leading our classes and volunteering to make U3A Nunawading a success. As part of our getting to know our team series, this month we talk to German for Travellers Class Leader Dieter Markworth.
It may be chilly outside, but June Snippets is bursting with things to do to keep you warm! You can enjoy a pizza lunch at U3A; be inspired at a local art show; attend a free movie; learn about support for carers at a workshop; connect with the Whitehorse Positive Ageing Connect and Support team for help; and for the little people in your life, you can choose something fun from the Whitehorse School Holiday program. Plus, we highlight our very own Calligraphy and Marvellous Melbourne 3 classes.
It is pleasing to see that many of our members have picked up a voucher from reception for a free coffee from the café at the Hub. If you have not done so yet, feel free to come by Reception and pick up a voucher. Remember strictly one voucher per member. Vouchers are valid until the end of Term 2.
This is the start of Volunteers Week 2025 – a time to acknowledge all the volunteers who make this great organisation what it is.
Now we’re into Term 2 things have settled down a bit and we hope you have found at least one class to attend. This month we are appreciating all our volunteers, and reminding you about name badges, apologies and waitlists. There are also a few new classes starting this term and Term 3 you may be interested in.
The “Guess How Many Lollies” competition above is part of the Thornburn Ladies Badminton Association’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 22 May at the Hub. Come along and support their fundraising for cancer research.
We were delighted to host our second Orientation Gathering of the year on 30 April to welcome our new members for Term 2.
These gatherings are a great opportunity for new members to connect, get to know one another, and share their experiences. They also provide a chance to ask questions and clarify any uncertainties.
The U3A Borrowing Library welcomes donations of popular books that people will want to borrow to read. All donated books must be in good condition to be accepted by the library. Read on for how to donate and use the library.
U3A Nunawading is lucky to have a great group of dedicated and talented class leaders and volunteers who enable us to offer a diverse range of courses and activities. To get to know them a little better, we plan to feature one of these members in each newsletter.
