The Social Committee is again marking the end of term with light refreshments for members at the Hub. They will be serving coffee and cake on the Monday and Wednesday of the final week. And, during the holidays, the Social Committee will be holding our first Christmas in July lunch.
Dragon Boat Racing and eating Zongzi are part of the annual festival that celebrates the life of this loyal Chinese courtier from more than 2000 years ago. This year U3A took part in the celebrations when Class Leader Lan Tiet showed members how to make the famous sticky rice dumplings.
This fascinating story will be shared with us at the August Four O’clock Forum when Winston Furlong speaks about abandoning a successful career as an engineer for the precarious world of independent filmmaking.
During the session, Winston will talk about his sea change into filmmaking and the many parallels he sees between systems engineering and filmmaking. If you were to ask him, “What’s money for?” he would answer without hesitation, “It’s to make things happen”.

Many of you may have noticed groups of us enjoying a tasty lunch in the Hub foyer over the past couple of weeks. Duty Committee Members (Valerie, Frank, Colin, June, Gary, Athalie, Judith, Marlene, Terry and myself) were hosting our valued teams of Reception Desk Volunteers as a way of thanking them for the work they do for U3A Nunawading. The service they provide enables us to be far more responsive to our 2,000+ members than we could ever do without them.
– We are offering an exciting new creative movement class starting shortly and we still have vacancies in a range of current classes.
– For your convenience, you can now request to withdraw from any of your classes online instead of having to do it at the office.
– Unfortunately, we have received a number of reports recently from members who have tested positive to Covid-19. Please do not come to the Hub if you are feeling at all unwell even if you haven’t had a positive test result.
Congratulations to Ann and Brian Ruck and Helen Smith who were recently recognised for their outstanding voluntary efforts with a 2022 Deakin Community Award. They were nominated by the U3A Nunawading Committee of Management on behalf of members for their highly valued contribution to the organisation.
The Social Committee hosted a successful gathering to end Term 1 and they have more exciting events to look forward to in Term 2. Check out the details below for members to meet for coffee and cake and Christmas in July.
