President’s Report

Welcome back to all members after our term break. I do hope that you had the opportunity to catch up with family and friends or better still get away from the Melbourne cold weather. I had a week’s break on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland where it proceeded to rain every day.

The City of Whitehorse, in partnership with Villa Maria Catholic Homes, are installing a Social Enterprise Café in the area nearest to the upstairs corridor, and on completion the Café will be serving coffee, snacks, and cake. Read on for more about what this means for you.

Celebrating Science Week at U3A

You’re invited to join two special science sessions to mark Science Week, 10-18 August, at U3A Nunawading.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres.

At U3A Nunawading, to get a very different perspective on the place of our Earth in the solar system and discover why a ‘correct’ scale image is impossible to show on a sheet of paper, come along to 24SCI016 Planets and Moons. Then to appreciate the impact of weather on success or failure in war, come to 24SCI018 Operation Overlord. Bookings are essential for both sessions.

Term 2 is now drawing to a close. Term 2 is now drawing to a close. We have quite a few new courses starting up in Terms 3 and 4 – some are listed at the bottom of this article while you will find Term 3 and 4 computer classes in a separate article in this newsletter. If you want to know whether there is room in a class, we now have a “spare” computer at reception where you can check for yourself – read on for details.
